On October 13, I had given a list of six stocks, suggesting that investors may invest equal amounts in each stock. This is what I had written:
Stocks, Sectors, Close on Oct 13, 2008
Infosys - IT , 1310
State Bank - Banking, 1526
MTNL - Communications, 68
NTPC - Power Generation, 180
GMDC - Natural Resources , 102
ONGC - Oil Exploration, 912
Invest equal amounts to each stock. Thus, if you are investing Rs 60,000/- , allocate Rs 10,000/- for each.
What has been the performance since October 13 ? Assuming that investments were made on October 14, close, the relative performance has been :
(Ocotber 14 close is taken as 100)
NIFTY : 77.13
Infosys - 84.04
State Bank - 78.53
MTNL - 99.00
NTPC - 87.01
GMDC - 64.33
ONGC - 77.14
Three of the six have outperformed the Nifty. One - GMDC has underperformed, while two has been market performers, moving with the Nifty. The portfolio is valued at 81.675 on November 21, as compared to the Nifty which is at 77.13. The portfolio contains four Nifty heavyweights - Infosys, ONGC, State Bank & NTPC. This ensures that the portfolio will not go out of line from the Index.
